NYC-based visual artist and producer Borna Libertines steps fully into the booth with 120h to Tokyo, an eight-track LP that plays like a five-day fever dream of the city itself. Sitting comfortably in the 138–140 BPM pocket, the record moves through peak-time drivers and slower, more atmospheric cuts without ever losing its throughline: real field recordings from Tokyo’s streets woven straight into the mix, giving tracks like “Night over Tokyo” and “Tokyo right now Tokyo right here” a documentary edge most techno records don’t bother reaching for.
The standout moment comes with “Dancing with Tokyo” and “Tokyo shunshin desu,” where jazz saxophone cuts through the analog haze – an unexpected but welcome detour that separates this from the pack of straight-ahead peak-time records. It’s a nice reminder that Borna’s background as a collage artist shows up in the production too: layering, texture, found sound, nothing quite where you’d expect it.
