New York City — Collage Graffiti & Electronic Music
Borna Libertines reconstitutes torn street posters into mixed-media collage paintings that capture a society driven by communication and the omnipresence of the media.
The Artist
Borna Libertines creates mixed-media collages by reconstituting torn-up snatches of popular artifacts — advertisements, street posters, wallpaper. His compositions feature text, pure blocks of color, commercial imagery and graffiti placement, remixed to convey humor, eroticism, and sociopolitical critique.
He builds paintings in which one poster is placed over another, the top poster ripped to reveal what lies beneath. This radical re-appropriation of an otherwise ordinary material enables him to capture the spirit of the times — a society driven by communication and its obsession with current affairs and the omnipresence of media.
"Urban erosion is more than just a physical change — it is the layers of history embedded in a place."
Over the past several years Borna has split his time between New York, Europe, Mexico City and Tokyo, collecting street posters and creating work that addresses personal, global and social themes.
Urban erosion is a natural phenomenon where materials are gradually removed or dissolved by rain, wind, and sun. I see the remnants as raw materials holding historical and cultural significance.
Instead of viewing erosion as decay or loss, I use the eroded material as a palette to create art that tells a story about a place and its history. My art engages with the interplay between past and present — revealing hidden layers, uncovering memories both positive and negative.
Whether transformation of materials or of perception, I aim to challenge viewers' perspectives and encourage them to see life through a different lens.
